Charmers cafe is located at the heart of Jarvis Square, in a building that has existed in Rogers Park since the early half of the 1900's.
The name Charmers is an homage to a former bar that existed in the very same building since the 1930's up until 2004. In the current incarnation of charmers you can see some of the original decoration that was used in the charmers bar adorning the walls of the Charmers cafe. From the greek style wood pillars, to the goddess diana facades.
At the very beginning in 2006, Charmers opened alongside it's sister location "The Dagel and Beli", where you could literally walk right next door and order not only a cup of coffee, but a tasty, warm and delicious bagel sandwich as well!The steaming of the sandwiches makes them soft, warm, and delicious. If you get one with cheese, it comes out nice and melted. You can of course get your sandwiches made to order from a variety of ingredients, steamed cold, toasted, on a bagel or bread.
While the Dagel and Charmers were originally two separate places that you could order different food items from, you can now order both your coffee, and a bagel sandwich, from the same location. While the Dagel and Beli sign still hangs above the door to the "Dagel" side of the cafe, what sits in it's place is more comfortable seating, as well as the Dagel and Beli art Gallery where you can see artwork done by local artists who reside in Rogers Park.
While Charmers has gone through many physical changes since it's opening, it still remains what it
was always intended to be. A central part of Jarvis Square, and a place where a diversity of people can come to share their ideas with others, escape from the daily grind, or even work all day. We certainly have the coffee supply!
As of April 20th 2010, Charmers has stood the test of four years of business, and while it would be difficult to quantify how much the Charmers cafe has made a difference in the Rogers Park(and the stomachs) of the people of Jarvis Square, It has definitely been a part of it.
